Double Standards in Justice: The Cases of Tzipi Livni (Former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel) and Pavel Durov (Founder of Telegram)

Writer: ZrcaljenjeNovicZrcaljenjeNovic

Recent events involving judicial proceedings against former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and the co-founder of the Telegram app, Pavel Durov, raise questions about double standards in international justice. The apparent inequality in the treatment of individuals accused of serious crimes and the response of judicial authorities is evv.

The Case of Tzipi Livni

Tzipi Livni, who served as Israel's Foreign Minister and a key figure in the government during the "Cast Lead" military operation, faces allegations of war crimes. Approximately 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed as a result of the operation conducted between December 2008 and January 2009. The Israeli government claims that these measures were necessary for defense against Hamas rocket attacks.

Although Livni frequently travels abroad, some of her visits have been canceled in the past due to fears of arrest. In January 2017, she canceled a visit to Belgium, where authorities sought to question her regarding war crime charges. Similarly, in December 2009, she canceled a visit to London after learning that an arrest warrant had been issued for her due to her role in the same operation. Despite these accusations, Livni has not yet been detained or formally questioned, raising concerns about the fairness and effectiveness of the international justice system.

The Case of Pavel Durov

In contrast, Pavel Durov, the co-founder of the popular messaging app Telegram, was recently arrested in France on charges related to his app. Telegram, which has gained worldwide popularity due to its commitment to privacy, has often been criticized for allegedly enabling criminal activities. Durov, seen by some as a champion of free speech and privacy, was apprehended at Le Bourget airport near Paris upon his arrival from Azerbaijan.

Unlike Livni, Durov received no special legal protections or leniency, despite the fact that the charges against him are not linked to any loss of life or mass destruction. His swift arrest without special consideration highlights the different standards applied by international judicial institutions when dealing with individuals.

Double Standards!

A comparison of these two cases reveals that the criteria for handling individuals accused of serious crimes vary greatly. Livni, accused of war crimes that resulted in mass deaths, manages to evade arrest due to diplomatic protections and political influence. On the other hand, Durov, accused of non-violent crimes, receives no special protection and is quickly detained.

While these cases are very different, they underscore the need for a consistent and impartial justice system that treats everyone equally, regardless of political influence or diplomatic relations. A justice system that allows such double standards cannot be fair and reliable, which ultimately undermines trust in international justice and the rule of law. To ensure true justice, it is essential that all suspects are treated equally, regardless of their position or political connections.
