On Wednesday evening, January 9, 2026, at the White House, journalists from The New York Times—Katie Rogers, Tyler Pager, David E. Sanger, and host Michael Barbaro—conducted an in-depth interview with U.S. President Donald Trump. David E. Sanger, the newspaper's White House and national security correspondent who reports on President Trump and his administration with a particular focus on foreign policy and its intersection with technology, politics, and great-power conflicts, posed key questions to Trump about the international legal order and America’s role in the world. Trump’s responses, delivered without restraint, revealed a mindset that sidelines international norms and elevates his judgment as the sole standard for actions with global consequences.

In recent days, the world has witnessed an alarming rise in unilateralism driven by U.S. President Donald Trump. His recent actions in Venezuela—seizing strategic oil reserves under the guise of "countering threats"—are not only a violation of international law but also set a dangerous precedent, pushing the world to the brink of a new global conflict. Trump’s rhetoric and actions reflect a deep crisis of leadership, where power replaces morality and justice.

1. Imperialist Approach in Venezuela: “We Threaten, Therefore We May”

Trump’s justification for intervening in Venezuela—“drugs, migration, and threats”—is far too transparent. The real motive is control over oil, evident from his own words: “We rebuilt their oil complex, and they took that away from us, and they're giving it back.” This is not diplomacy; this is economic imperialism dressed up in security rhetoric. The U.S. behaves as a self-appointed global police force, deciding when and where to intervene, while international institutions remain silent or powerless.

2. Undermining the International Legal Order

Trump’s statement, “I don’t need international law,” must be taken seriously. This is not just a chauvinistic remark; it is a rejection of the collective security and legal order the world has built for decades since World War II. Disregarding rules that apply to the “weak” while powerful nations operate by their own standards triggers a dangerous and unpredictable dynamic.

3. War as a Political Instrument: “My Morality Is My Limit”

When journalists asked what could restrain his power on the global stage, Trump replied, “My own morality. My own mind.” This is the most frightening aspect of his philosophy—the belief that his subjective judgment is sufficient for decisions with global consequences. His threat to deploy ground troops to Venezuela (“There's a possibility I would do that”) and hints of a “second wave” signal escalation, not de-escalation.

4. A World on the Brink of War: How Trump Is Triggering a Chain Reaction

Trump’s policies are explosively dangerous for the entire world. By rejecting international cooperation, spreading instability in Latin America, and fueling regional tensions (e.g., toward Iran, North Korea, and Greenland), he is creating conditions for a chaotic chain reaction. His obsession with military power (“We spent almost a trillion dollars a year rebuilding the military”) and disdain for diplomacy resemble the worst moments in history and are leading toward catastrophe.

Is There Still Time to Stop Trump’s Recklessness?

The Trump administration is not only dangerous for the U.S.—it is dangerous for the world. His combination of megalomania, disregard for international law, and military agenda recalls historical precursors to global conflicts. If the world does not respond—with diplomacy, economic pressure, and collective action—Trump’s policies could lead the world down a path of no return. A Call for Sanity: The international community must recognize that rules without fair enforcement are not rules—they are merely tools of the powerful. And if the powerful do not abide by their own rules, we are all on the brink of collapse.
