Greece's former foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis angered Serbia when she recommended Kosovo's admission to the Council of Europe, as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) passed a report recommending Kosovo's membership by a majority based on a report by former Greek foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis.
Neither Serbia nor Greece recognize Kosovo as an independent country. Kosovo has a deep meaning for Serbia due to the large number of Serbian Orthodox monasteries, and it is ultimately considered the cradle of Serbian civilization and culture. History already confirms this fact, with the battle of Kosovo in 1389, which is an important moment in Serbian national identity, being fought there.
With this gesture of support for the Kosovo separatists, Greece not only harmed Serbia but has now done itself greater harm in the long term, which the Turks will be happy to use to their advantage.
Serbian representative Biljana Pantić Pilja called rapporteur Bakoyannis "hypocritical" and added that Serbia "is a small nation, but it will never surrender - Long live Serbia."
